Orson Hyde

Apostle Orson Hyde returned from his mission of dedicating Palestine on December 7, 1842. Within four months, he had learned of plural marriage from Joseph Smith and had married his first plural wife. In 1869 Hyde wrote, “In the month of February or March, 1843, I was married to Miss Martha R. Browitt, by Joseph Smith, the martyred prophet, and by him she was sealed to me for time and all eternity in Nauvoo, Illinois.”30 Such a sealing would not have occurred without a discussion of plural marriage.

Hyrum Smith

As the Prophet’s brother, Church patriarch, and associate Church president, Hyrum Smith appears to have received many instructions from and private consultations with Joseph on plural marriage even though Hyrum did not accept plural marriage until May of 1843.31 For example, Charles C. Rich recalled: “May A.D. 1844 as he was about Starting on a mission to the State of Michigan, Hyrum Smith, Patriarch, taught him the principle of polygamy or celestial marriage, and told him that when he should return from the Said Mission it would be his privelidge to take other wives.”32 Julia Pack recalled: “We were acquainted with Joseph and Hyrum Smith and have often listened to their teachings. In August 1843 I was sealed to John Pack for time and eternity by Hyrum Smith.”33 In a public discourse on April 8, 1844 Hyrum discussed plural marriage in the context of proxy sealings. While his words were transcribed, they were not published—even though other discourses from the conference were printed in the Church’s Times and Seasons.34
